Joelle Nagy

My paintings are a visual representation of growing up Hungarian-American and a celebration of my cultural experiences. Using oil paints, mixed media, and printmaking, I search for a more holistic understanding of my cultural heritage in order to obtain a clearer ethnic identity, and what it personally means to be bicultural. There is a sense of nostalgia in all my work, and a longing to feel connected to my Hungarian heritage. My paintings fuse recipes, memories, Hungarian motifs, and old photographs in effort to describe and keep my traditions and cultural beliefs as a legacy to pass on to the next generation, as well as a personal journey to recover my own identity.
